The area around Ogulin is full of beautiful nature, which we can explore via numerous roads with little traffic. Along these roads, we will encounter many houses built in the traditional wooden style. Despite their many years, these houses are regularly maintained and are still inhabited today. It seems that this way of life is becoming increasingly popular.
The route starts in the center of Ogulin and soon begins with a climb that takes us over the hill to Popovo Selo and on to Trošmarije. In Trošmarije, we cross a bridge over the Dobra River and continue cycling along a quiet road.
We pass through numerous villages full of wooden houses that are still in use today. In the distance, we often see the peak of Klek, which dominates the entire area around Ogulin.
At Višnjić Brdo (approx. 19 km), we turn off the route to descend to a hidden natural gem, the source of the Bistrica stream. This small valley is a place where nature reveals itself in its most beautiful form. The water emerges from two separate spots at the source, and next to it lie the remains of an historic mill. Near the mill, we can also observe a millstone.
The return from the source of the Bistrica involves a somewhat steep climb, so you may need to push your bicycle for less than 100 meters. The effort is undoubtedly worth it to visit this place.
Further on, we pass through Tounj to the village of Zdenac. In Zdenac, we can restock supplies and enjoy a coffee at a local café. Zdenac is home to a historic bridge over the Tounjčica River, built in 1775, which has been expanded and renovated over time. Next to the bridge, there is a rest area with a lovely view of the structure. It is a perfect spot for a rest!
From Zdenac, the route continues for 6 km along the state road D23. During the tourist season, this road is extremely busy, so please pay close attention to traffic. Outside the tourist season, D23 is manageable. If you prefer to avoid the traffic on D23, we suggest returning to Ogulin via the same route. Retracing your pedal strokes will reward you with the same experience but from a different perspective 😉
After approximately 6 km on the state road, the route continues toward Ogulin and soon returns to roads with very little traffic. In Oštarije, we cross another historic bridge, known as Marmont’s Bridge, and continue toward Lake Sabljaci.
There are numerous spots along the route to take a break and enjoy the natural beauty. However, it is essential to bring enough food and water, as there are few places along the way to restock supplies.
How to get to the start
The bike route begins in Ogulin’s town centre, just a short distance from the train station. This makes it incredibly easy to arrive by rail and start pedaling right away!
